Healthcare in Lithuania

Why it matters when you're new to Lithuania

English-speaking team

Our family doctors and staff communicate in English, so nothing gets lost in translation when it matters most.

Guidance through the system

We explain how registration, insurance, referrals and prescriptions work in Lithuania — step by step.

Health insurance, explained

We help you understand Compulsory Health Insurance (CHI / PSDF) and what it covers for your situation.

At a glance

How the Lithuanian healthcare system works

  1. 1

    Check your insurance

Find out whether you are covered by Compulsory Health Insurance (CHI / PSDF) based on your residence status and employment.

  2. 2

    Register with a family doctor

Choose a clinic and register through Lithuania's national e-Pacientas portal. Your family doctor becomes your first point of contact.

  3. 3

    Your first appointment

The family doctor assesses your health, answers your questions and starts any treatment you need.

  4. 4

    Specialist referrals

If specialist care is required, your family doctor issues a referral — to a neurologist, cardiologist, physiotherapist and more.

  5. 5

    Ongoing care

Prevention, regular check-ups, vaccinations and long-term condition management — all coordinated by your family doctor.

Insurance

Who is eligible for Compulsory Health Insurance (CHI)?

Eligibility depends on your residence status and employment. Here is how it usually applies — contact us if you are unsure.

Non-EU national (national D visa)

Usually not covered by CHI. You can use affordable self-pay services or private insurance — we will advise you.

Temporary residence permit

Generally not covered unless you are legally employed in Lithuania; then contributions are paid and CHI applies.

Permanent residence permit

Full access to Compulsory Health Insurance, like Lithuanian residents.

EHIC holders (EU/EEA)

Your European Health Insurance Card covers medically necessary and emergency care during your stay.

S1 document holders

Full access to CHI after registering your S1 with the Territorial Health Insurance Fund (Ligonių kasa).

EU cross-border patients

EU rules may let you receive and be reimbursed for planned care in Lithuania — ask us how it applies to you.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do you speak English?

Yes. Our family doctors and front-desk staff communicate in English, so you can describe your concerns clearly and understand your care.

As an international student, am I automatically covered?

Not automatically — it depends on your residence status and whether you are employed. We will help you check whether Compulsory Health Insurance (CHI) applies to you.

Are family doctor visits free with CHI?

If you are covered by CHI, family doctor consultations and many tests are reimbursed by the state — free for you at the point of care.

What if I am not insured?

You can still receive care through our affordable self-pay options. We will explain the prices in advance.

Can my family members register too?

Yes. Family members can register with our family doctors as well — just let us know.

What documents do I need?

Bring your passport and your Lithuanian personal code (asmens kodas). For CHI-covered care, your insurance status will be checked.
